Spilled Ink: A Reminder Of Who We Are & What We Are Trying To Do (A call to arms - re-blog, tell your friends! →

    What is Spilled Ink?

Great question. Basically it was born from a conversation one night. We were perplexed with some of the omissions from the #poetry tag … and yes, we understand it has to be a daunting effort to include everyone who writes so well on tumblr - that, we had no issues with.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us, it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

    Words of Wisdom

Today, my baby sister turns 15…which makes me feel incredibly old :)  I changed her diapers and rocked her to sleep as a baby, I was there when she started school and helped her with her homework, I watched her grow into the amazing young woman she is now.

So, as she is growing into her own and shaping into the woman she will be, I have these words to share with her.  These are words I wish I’d heard from an older sister at that age, words that I pray will stick with her when the world feels like it’s crumbling around her, words she can come back to time and again to aid her through life’s trials…

Life is meant to be lived.  Spend only enough time thinking about the past to remind yourself how far you’ve come and only enough time thinking about the future to remind yourself where it is you want to go.  Focus on today, on each small battle won.

Heartbreak, pain and sadness are all inevitable parts of life.  These are the moments in which we truly know ourselves.  It’s how we learn strength and grace, it’s how we grow.  Do not spend so much of your life mourning the things you’ve lost or crying over the things that have broken, for you will miss out on all the beautiful things life still has to offer.  Learn the lessons, rejoice in the chance to live another day and know that this, too, shall ALWAYS pass.

Boys will never be what the fairytales promise.  Some of them will hurt you, but that is not a reason to lose your faith in love.  They aren’t perfect, nor are we, and you will never find one that is.  You won’t always understand why they do the things they do, you won’t always see eye to eye, and that’s ok. People are different, and it’s those differences that make our relationships with others so meaningful.

The people you keep around you are a reflection upon yourself.  Work hard to keep the poisonous friendships out of our circle because they will only multiply your misfortunes.  Your friends should be people you can rely on, who can tell you the truth no matter how much it may hurt, who will stand by you regardless of your differences, and who will lift you up when you knock yourself down.

Love is anything but perfect…but true, honest love is one of life’s greatest treasures.  Don’t go looking for it.  When you find a man who adores you for your flaws, rather than in spite of them; a man who you can be not simply lovers with, but who you can be friends with; a man who treasures his time with you, but understands that sometimes you also need time apart to help you appreciate each others’ company; a man who wants to take care of you, yet respects you enough to realize that you are able to stand on your own two feet; a man who will be your protector, but isn’t afraid to show his love regardless of where you are or who’s around; a man who is honest, trustworthy, loyal, compassionate, strong, affectionate, open and understanding; a family man who can provide for you and appreciates that you can provide for him…when you find that man in someone you truly love, then you hold on and never let go.

You decide you’re own path, and you have to stick by the choices you make.  Don’t do anything that makes you uncomfortable or that you view as wrong.  Stand by your beliefs and never let anyone tell you to believe otherwise.  Listen to those with more experience, and take their wisdom into consideration, but in the end, you will have to live with the consequences of every action you take.  Do what makes you happy.

See some of the world before you decide to settle down and start a family, but don’t think that you can’t pick back up where you left off when you get older and have someone by your side that you want to share those experiences with.

A healthy, happy life is all about balancing good & bad - you can’t have one without the other.  So eat the food want, but remember to keep moving.  Buy the things you desire, but remember that the bills come first.  Say the things that you wish to say, but remember that your words can have an impact on someone else’s life.  Work hard to achieve your goals, but remember that enjoying life is just as important.  Never forget where you came from, but don’t always let it effect where you are going.  Learn to do things on your own, but never be afraid to ask for help.

I know you’ve still got a few years before the reality of being an adult really sets in, but the sooner you know these things, the easier the transition will be to make.  I love you with every fiber of my being, and I will always be right here for you no matter the distance between us.  I will always be your friend, I will always keep your secrets and share in your joys, I will always dry your tears and try to help you make sense of the pain, and I will always, always be proud of you.  Never forget that…
